Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer might have been the one that murderd John Walsh’s son Adam?
Posted by Capri on February 13, 2007

The host of ‘America’s Most Wanted’ said he’s seen no evidence linking his son’s unsolved kidnapping and slaying to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, despite a recent report laying out a possible connection.
Theories of a Dahmer tie to the 1981 killing of John Walsh’s 6-year-old son Adam date back years but resurfaced with a report in the Daily Business Review, a Miami publication.
‘America’s Most Wanted’ issued a news release Tuesday saying its producers and investigators have long been aware of the rumors but that no credible information has emerged. Walsh believes another serial killer, Ottis Toole, killed his son.
Arthur Jay Harris, who wrote the Daily Business Review story in December, has written three true crime books _ including an unpublished one on Adam’s killing that he is trying to sell.
Harris says a review of the 7,000-page case file shows two men claimed to have seen a man who looked like Dahmer at the mall where Adam was abducted during a shopping trip with his mother. One of the men said he saw the Dahmer look-alike carrying a struggling boy into a blue van.
Adam’s head was found 100 miles away in a Vero Beach canal.
The witnesses told police they recognized Dahmer’s photo after he was arrested in Wisconsin in 1992. Dahmer lived in South Florida at the time of Adam’s slaying and reportedly had access to a blue van.
‘I’m not way off on this,’ Harris said Wednesday. ‘This is something that needs to be investigated.’
The Hollywood Police Department, the lead agency on the case, did not immediately return a call late Wednesday afternoon. Capt. Tony Rode told The Miami Herald, ‘We investigated the Dahmer link and spoke with Dahmer. We don’t believe he murdered Adam.’
Prosecutors said they would re-examine past statements related to a possible Dahmer connection.
Toole, a drifter who was convicted of or pleaded guilty to several murders and claimed hundreds of others, told police he killed the boy with the help of a partner. But the alleged accomplice was in jail at the time and Toole was unable to correctly describe the child’s hair or clothing.
Authorities made a series of crucial errors, losing the bloodstained carpeting from Toole’s car _ preventing DNA testing _ and the car itself. Still, Toole’s niece told Walsh that her uncle gave her a prison deathbed confession to the murder in September 1996.
Walsh has said he believes the confession in part because investigators found clothing similar to Adam’s at Toole’s Jacksonville home.
Dahmer was serving a series of life sentences after admitting to the murders of 17 young men and boys, some of whom he mutilated and cannibalized, when he was killed by another inmate at a Wisconsin prison in 1994. . . . .Source: Celebrity Mound

Hello my name is Sondra Torres, I am the sister of Willis Morgan. Willis has been in the news recently with regard to the the Adam Walsh Kidnapping. I just want to say that when Adam Walsh was kidnapped my brother called me and was shaken up because he went to the police with information of an encounter with a disheveled and demonic looking man in the mall the day of the kidnapping. this man came up to my brother and made an Erie eye contact, telling Willis “nice day out, isn’t it. and then a second time. on the second time it was said with extreme anger. Willis ignored the man hoping he would just go away. my brother told me at one point he was concerned for his safety. When my brother went to the police, he was brushed off. I believe they took his name and phone number but never contacted him. he made many attempts to contact the police but continued to get the brush off.
After being brushed off eventually my brother gave up until 10 yrs later when he went to work (Miami herald) and saw on the front page of the Miami Herald the picture of the man he encountered at the mall the day Adam Walsh was kidnapped. The picture was of Jeffery Dahmer. he knew he would NEVER forget that face and Erie eye contact from yrs earlier. He was extremely shaken up and again went to police, again getting the brush off. He called me in NY (where I lived at the time, now in Florida) I told him I would call the police in Milwaukee. The police in Milwaukee took his phone number and name, they told me they would call him, but never did. My brother even contacted the FBI to no avail.
last week Willis was on line up, he was given a 15 second time frame to say what he knows, that’s impossible to do. I was wondering if someone from your office would take the time to call him, give him a chance to say what he knows about what happen the day he was at the mall when Adam Walsh was kidnapped. you will hear how unbelievably credible his story is.
They media has said that “new witnesses” are coming forward, well that’s not at all true. He is not coming forward at this point for the first time. he has been trying for many yrs to get someone to listen to what he has to say about that erie encounter at the mall on the day of the kidnapping. I am hoping that someone from your office will give him that chance.
Also I read in a news article written by john Walsh stating there is no credible evidence that Dahmer did the kidnapping. No one has interviewed the sunshine subway shop owner where Dahmer was employed at the time of the kidnapping and he had full access to the subway shop delivery blue van. A blue van was seen behind the sears mall the night of the kidnapping speeding off. Bill Bowen witnessed a young boy being pulled into a blue van, yelling “no, no i dont want to go”
Willis Morgan and Bill Bowen have only met via phone in the past few months for the first time. They both have similar stories of making many attempts to report what they saw at the mall the night of the kidnapping to no avail getting brushed off with statements like :”yea right” by the police.. They were surprised to find out that each of them were treated the same with complete disregard by the police.
John Walsh has not spoken to Willis Morgan, Art Harris the private investigator or Bill Bowen to this date, nor have the police thank you for taking the time to read this e mail

I’m sorry but I didn’t write this article, I just cut and paste it. I have no offices or know anyone in the media or police. Maybe if your brother keeps on talking about this, then more might come forward and more will listen.

My encounter at Radio Shack
Willis Morgan
In 1981. I was working at the Miami herald in my 9th year. I worked as the training supervisor in the pressroom. My work days were Wednesday through Saturday from 19:00 to 05:30 AM. My days off were Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Working a four day workweek was like having a mini vacation every week! Usually during the week I would get to sleep around 06:30 AM and get up around 15:00 but on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays I would get to sleep around 02:AM. This would give me full days to get personal things done.
———————————
Monday July 27th 1981 was one of those days when I got up early. I didn’t have anything scheduled for this day so I decided to go to Walden’s Book Store and have lunch at the German Deli in the “Sears Mall” Hollywood Mall.
———————————
With Monday being my middle day off and not having nothing scheduled I was not paying attention to the time but I think it was around early afternoon when I left to the book store. I parked in the east parking lot and went into the Mall through the Food Court entrance.
———————————I didn’t see anything I wanted in Walden’s. I hung around the store looking at books for about 20 minutes or so but didn’t buy anything finally I decided to go down to the German Deli and get something to eat. On the way to the Deli I decided to stop at Radio Shack and look around before lunch.
———————————
As I walked into Radio Shack I headed toward the right aisle side of the store but stopped at the red tag sale table. I picked something up that caught my eye and was looking at it when I noticed in my peripheral vision someone coming from the North Mall entrance and stopping at the entrance to Radio Shack. I had a sense someone was looking at me so I looked up and realized this dirty, dissolved young man was staring at me! When I made eye contact with him, He Smiled at me with a really crappy grin and said “HI THERE NICE DAY, ISN’T IT?” I didn’t answer him thinking he would just go away. Instead he lost the smile and stared at me really hard! like he was angry or something. I looked back toward the table and the item I had picked up thinking If I stopped making eye contact he would go away. Instead He came into the Radio Shack and stopped about arms length from me and repeated in a very loud tone. “HI THERE NICE DAY ISN’T IT?” Not wanting to start a conversion with him, I said nothing and never looked up at his face again. At this point, I was pretending to be looking at the item in my hands but I was keeping an eye on him with my peripheral vision, mostly from the waist down. He just stood there for what seemed like an eternity. I knew he was staring at me, and this sense came over me like he was tensing up. I started thinking “What is this guy up to”? I had this sense like he wanted to grab my arm. For some reason I am thinking this guy wants to try to pull me out of the Mall. I wondered if he had a knife. At that point I’m thinking something is going to happen and I will need a witness so I looked over to my right to see where the store clerk was. I saw him all the way in the back of the store putting things on a shelf. I thought about walking to the back of the store but thought better of it and decided to stay put. I didn’t want this guy to see me walk with a limp from an old motorcycle accident. Just as I turned back around to the table I noticed this guy abruptly turn around and walk out of the store. Whew! man oh man!
———————————
There was no doubt to me that he would approach someone else and I wondered what their reaction would be. Then it dawned on me SOMEONE MIGHT NEED HELP! I waited a few seconds to give him a lead, then walked to the Radio Shack entrance. I knew at that point I would have to remember that face and as I started to follow him in the mall at a safe distance, I repeated to myself his description. “Dirty blond hair to the collar, yellow shirt, blue jeans, white sneakers, about my height, about 170 to 180 lbs.” this was too much to remember and I thought about going into the German Deli and ask for pen and paper but just then he turned into the Sears store so I decided not to loose him and continued following. as he walked to the far west side of Sears he turned to the right. I walked a little faster to that point where he turned and looked to the right. I saw him turn into the Toy Department. I decided to go to the left and watch and see what he was up to. As I was standing behind a rack of men’s suits for about ten seconds I suddenly realized that was the end of the Mall “Sears” and he would be coming back this way. Not wanting another encounter I decided to leave. When I got to the east exit in the Food Court I got my car keys out and looked around to make sure he hadn’t followed me. I saw the coast was clear and walked quickly to my car and nervously unlocked the door. Only after I was in my car and the door was locked did I feel comfortable. At that time I went home and decided to forget about that “NUT’ in the mall.
———————————
That evening I turned on the news. I was in the Kitchen when I heard about a Kidnapping in the Toy Department at Sears. I was nearly floored. I knew without a doubt it was the guy that I had followed to the toy department. I made another commitment to remember his face and description.
———————————
When I went to work Wednesday 19:00 I told some co-workers about the incident in the Sears Mall on Monday. Richard Herland suggested to me to go to the Hollywood Police Department. The next morning, Thursday July 30, 1981 at about 9 AM I went to the Police Department across the street from the Sears Mall.
———————————I walked up to the glass window and told the receptionist I was there about the kidnapping at the Mall. She told me to see officer Presley. They had a special desk set up just for information about this case. I tried to tell the officer what happen but he didn’t seem interested. He only wanted to know if I had seen a tag number. I tried to tell him the incident never went out of the Mall. He then asked for a description which I gave him. Officer Presley asked if I had a receipt. When I told him I didn’t buy anything he was curt and took my name and phone number and said they would call me if they needed me. He was a bit condescending the whole time and when I left I felt like a jerk for going there. No one has ever called me. They never called me and I thought I had to offer because I didn’t see a Vehicle or tag.
———————————
Several years later when I was at work, the pressroom secretary came to me with a paper asking me if the man on the front page was the man I had seen in the Mall back in 1981. I looked at it and told her no. the Man was Ottis Toole and did not look like the man I had encountered.
———————————In 1991 I was working in the pressroom office when the papers started coming in for paper check. As soon as I saw the first paper I started freaking out. “THIS IS HIM! THIS IS THE GUY I SAW IN THE MALL! My boss Steve Hopkins had to calm me down. I remembered that face and I was positive this was him. I could hardly function the rest of the night.
———————————The next morning I went back to the Hollywood Police Department. I was referred to a detective on the third floor. The Detective I talked to told me Det. Hoffman was on that case but was not in. He took my phone number and told me Det. Hoffman would call me back.
———————————Detective Hoffman did call me back and asked me to come in. When I went to see him He asked me why I am coming in now and not in 1981? I told him that I did come in 1981. He asked me to wait and left of the room. when He came back he asked me “If you came in 1981 where is your taped statement. I told him I didn’t make a taped statement and explained to him that officer Presley took some notes and said “they would call me back” but never did. I thought I had nothing to offer so I never came back. I gave Det. Hoffman phone numbers of co-workers, friends and family to verify that I did come in 1981 or at least I have been telling friends, family and co-workers since 1981. He never called anyone!
———————————Detective Hoffman asked me to come back in for a taped statement and kept in touch with me. One day he asked me to come in. When I went to see him he told me he was going up to interview Jeffrey Dahmer. I asked him if I could go with him but told me “That’s not going to happen.” I knew If I confronted Dahmer face to face he just might confess. I knew if Det. Hoffman went up by himself this interview would not go well because of the previous interviews I had with Hoffman. For instance when I would ask him to come over to the Mall he would flat-out refuse by saying “I’M NOT GOING OVER TO THAT MALL!”
———————————When Det. Hoffman returned from his interview with Dahmer he called me at home and told me he was eliminating Dahmer as a suspect. I told him that’s not possible. You can’t do that. I am sure beyond a doubt it was him but he told me Dahmer had looked him in the eye and said he didn’t do it and you know what “I believe him.” Det. Hoffman said “Dahmer told me he wanted to come to Florida because he knows Florida has the death penalty and he doesn’t want to live.” besides Hoffman said “That little kid doesn’t fit his MO.” I was thinking “Someone forgot to tell Dahmer he had an MO to stick to.” Then He went on to say Jeffrey said he was working seven days a week ten hours a day and never had days off and would not have had time to do anything like that (Adam’s kidnapping). Hoffman said Dahmer told him he didn’t have a vehicle. was sleeping on the beach and was drinking heavy and didn’t know where Hollywood is. I could not understand how anyone could work seven days a week for 10 hours a day and be broke or drink heavy and keep a job! This made no sense but apparently it made all the sense in the world to Det. Hoffman! I told Hoffman I could see he was not believing me and asked what I could do to get him to believe me. Can I take a polygraph? He said he was not going to give me one.
———————————
When I left I refused to give up! I needed to get someone to investigate! I went to the Miami Beach Police Department thinking Dahmer was sleeping on the beach but they told me this was not in their Jurisdiction and I would have to go to the Hollywood Police Department. Thanks, I went to the Miami Herald and talked to Pat May thinking at least he could check out my credibility since I work in the Pressroom. I went to channel 10 on Biscayne Blvd in Miami, Channel 7 on the Normandy Causway in Miami, The FBI in north Miami, I wrote to an Author of a book I bought about Jeffrey Dahmer, My sister called the Milwaukee Police Department on my behalf and told them about my encounter at the Hollywood Mall. They told her they would call me but never did. I even wrote to John Walsh. What else could I do? No one was getting back to me and then Eleana Bravo from one of the TV stations called me. She said she called the Hollywood Police Department and talked to Det. Hoffman. She said he told her Dahmer has been eliminated as a suspect and so their is nothing I can do with the information you gave me… Now I knew why no one was getting back to me! What else could I do! I went to the FBI, If the FBI does not do anything, who else would. No one I could think of, I felt like I was standing on top of a mountain yelling and no one could hear me! so I gave up!
———————————
Several years later I read in the Miami Herald that Det. Hoffman was off the case and this new “hot shot” Detective that was good at solving cold cases was taking over. His name was Mark Smith. I figured I had a chance to get someone to listen to me so I called the Hollywood Police Department and asked for Det. Smith. When I tried to tell Det. Smith what happen he all but called me a lire! He didn’t want to listen to anything I said. He would say “YEA RIGHT” when I told him what happen. I was not expecting that so I paused for a bit but then tried to finish. When I told Det. Smith that I started getting nervous when Dahmer came into the Radio Shack and started hovering over me he said “OH YEA RIGHT YOUR AFRAID OF HIM.”
———————————
Det. Hoffman was not as rude. He would tell me that he believes me but “South Florida has so many crazy people that it could have been any crazy person in South Florida. This was ridicules.
——————————————————————————–
IT WAS JEFFREYDAHMER!! Anyone who has an encounter with Dahmer and ignores him, rebuffs, rejects him, it will become something you will never forget! This encounter was up close, in person. This was not like someone seeing something for a fleeting moment at a safe distance! I don’t think he grasped anything I told him. I am convinced there is no hope for this case with these Detectives at the Hollywood Police Department.
——————————————————————————–

I am convinced there is no hope for this case with these Detectives at the Hollywood Police Department.
——————————————————————————–
No one I could think of, so I gave up!

(Capt. Tony Rode told The Miami Herald, “We investigated the Dahmer link and spoke with Dahmer. We don’t believe he murdered Adam.”)—– The two places you don’t want to get your information from is Jeffrey Dahmer and The Hollywood Police Department…. YOU IDIOT, CAPT. RODE!

You did everything you could. Most police don’t care and brush off anyone coming forward with information. So many times I read about suspects that could have been caught but nothing was done and not even questioned.

Hollywood Police Capt. Tony Rode, the public information officer said that Arthur Jay Harris’s theory that Jeffrey Dahmer killed Adam Walsh “is not new at all.” Rode has said “police interviewed the two witnesses who claimed they saw Dahmer in 1991 and again a few years ago when Harris came to the police with his theory.” If this is not new information then why is it that they have NEVER interviewed Darlene Hill, the owner of the sub shop where Jeffrey Dahmer worked, Nor the manager of the sub shop Ken Halbert. Nor the witness in the Sears parking lot. One of the reason the Police Told me they are Dismissing Dahmer is that he couldn’t have had time because Dahmer said he was working 7 days a week, 10 hours a day and never took days off. Ken Halbert, the man who hired Dahmer says Dahmer barley worked 3 or 4 hours a day and never worked weekends. Also he would have to send him home many times because he look so disshoveled! It is blatantly untrue that Hollywood Police re-interviewed me after Harris brought them his new information. Nor have I ever at any time been called by Hollywood Police since 1992. Could it be that the Hollywood Police do not want to admit they took the word of a serial killer back in 1991?
I told Hollywood Police what I saw in 1981, soon after the event. I have since learned that my statement was lost. Immediately after I saw Dahmer’s photo in The Miami Herald in 1991, I again contacted Hollywood Police and this time was allowed to give a taped statement.
Jeffrey Dahmer tried to pick me up inside Radio Shack in the Hollywood Mall. I will never forget his evil eyes, especially after I tried to ignore him. Knowing that someone else might need help, at a safe distance, I followed him through the mall, into Sears, then watched him enter its toy department.
In 1994 when I re-contacted the police, I spoke to Det. Mark Smith. Within 30 seconds on the phone, after I told him I saw Jeffrey Dahmer in the Hollywood Mall the day Adam was taken, he dismissed me by saying,”Yeah, right.”
After speaking to me at length in 2003, Arthur Jay Harris told me he would repeat my story to the Hollywood Police, along with those of corroborating witnesses he found whom police did not know of. Harris told me to expect a call from Det. Smith. None ever came from him or anyone else from that agency, then or since.

My only wish is that John Walsh would personally call my brother Willis Morgan so he can get the real truth, the police are not telling Mr. Walsh the truth. John Walsh is taking the word of the police who are covering up the awful job they did back in 1981 when little Adam was taken.
We know for a fact that the 17 men that were beheaded by Dahmer would still be alive today if the job was done right, and possibly little Adam could still be alive if police moved in on the reports Willis Morgan gave to police in 1981 as well as Bill Bowen and several others instead of brushing these men aside and telling the media that these men were interviewed. John Walsh if you are reading this PLEASE PLEASE contact me Sondra Torres (sister of Willis Morgan) or contact Willis Morgan. You will get the true facts and the truth..sondra Torres

But those witnesses, whom police interviewed in 1992 after Dahmer was arrested in other murders, didn’t provide any new leads, Smith said. Dahmer repeatedly denied having a role in Adam’s death—————————-Detective Smith Believed the words of a Serial killer back then in 1991 and to this day he is believing those words. dismissing my statements altogether. Could it be that Dahmer can lie better than I can tell the truth? My encounter was not like someone seeing something at a fleeting glance from a far off safe distance. It was up close, in person. He (Dahmer) looked at me, He smiled at me, He talked to me and he got angry at me when I did not respond to him! That was before the encounter became intense! He then entered the Radio Shack and came up to me. I was thinking “This guy must want someone to talk to really bad!” That’s when it became really intense! Finally he bolted out of the Radio Shack like he was really angry! I knew he would approach someone else so I just walked to the Radio Shack entrance and looked down the Mall hallway. I watched him walk deep into the Mall. there was no one for him to approach. he then turned into Sears. I went to the point where he turned and looked into Sears thinking someone might need help! I watched him walk to the west end of sears and turn to the right. I knew there was nothing down that way except a toy dept., a plant dept. and a service counter. Again I went to the point where turned and saw him turn into the toy department. He never came back out! I was wondering what he was doing in the toy department. I then decided to leave thinking when he did come back out he would come back my way and I did not want another encounter. It was that very same evening that I heard about a Kidnapping AT THE HOLLYWOOD MALL! in the SEARS TOY DEPARTMENT! Willis Morgan

Dahmer Did It
Why won’t Hollywood police take seriously the best chance at solving Adam Walsh’s murder?

Jeffrey Dahmer killed Adam Walsh.
We know the faces of Jeffrey Dahmer and Adam Walsh so well. But could they have crossed paths?
That’s right. The most infamous cannibal in American history murdered one of the most publicized child abduction victims of the past half-century, the 6-year-old son of America’s Most Wanted host John Walsh.
Sounds crazy, right?
Well, I think it’s true. And I know it deserves a full investigation by law enforcement.
But the Hollywood Police Department, which has basically botched the investigation from the get-go, is giving the idea short shrift, and John Walsh himself has tossed the theory out the window before examining it in any detail.
The truth is that local true crime writer Arthur Jay Harris has compiled an undeniably strong case that Milwaukee’s notorious drunken cannibal — who was living in South Florida at the time of Adam’s murder — was the culprit. Harris has dug up compelling new details, including information that Dahmer likely had access at the time to the type of vehicle — a blue van — believed to have been used in the abduction.
A December article Harris wrote for the Daily Business Review on findings that he spent more than four years gathering has gotten national attention in the past couple of weeks. But his arguments were met more with skepticism than true interest and were swiftly bumped out of the news by the NASA love triangle and the death of Anna Nicole Smith.
Scuttling the theory, however, would be a travesty.
“Let’s look at this new information in an unbiased way,” urges former FBI agent Neil Purtell, who questioned Dahmer on numerous occasions and even asked him about Adam. “I don’t think you can put it in a box and put the cover on it.”
Incredulity, however, is natural in such a case. Saying Dahmer killed Walsh is sort of like declaring that Hitler kidnapped the Lindbergh baby. The first reaction is, “No way.” But I’ve seen the evidence and am nearly convinced that it was Dahmer who took Adam from a mall and left only his decapitated head to be found in a canal.
Or, I should say, I’ve met the evidence. Last week, I went to see Harris at the Weston condo where he lives with his mother, Harriet. With the author was a man at the center of the Adam Walsh case, one Willis Morgan.
“It’s been a frustrating 26 years, let me tell you,” were the first words Morgan said to me. “Now Art knows what I’ve been through because he’s getting a taste of it himself.”
Then he told me his amazing story, beginning at the Radio Shack in the Hollywood Mall on July 27, 1981, the day Adam was abducted. It was a Monday, a day off from his job as training supervisor at the Miami Herald pressroom.
Morgan was standing in the store at a red-tag sale table when a dirty, disheveled man with blond hair appeared near the doorway. Morgan says the man stared dead at him for a while before he said in a very loud voice, “Hi there. Nice day, isn’t it?”
Morgan ignored the deranged-looking man, hoping he’d go away. But he kept staring at him and seemed to be getting angrier by the second.
“It was a look of rage,” he told me. “It was so hard, I felt like it was laser beams staring at the back of my skull. Think of the craziest person you’ve ever seen in your life, then multiply it by ten.”
The man walked right up to Morgan and, within a few feet of his face, repeated, “Hi there. Nice day, isn’t it?”
Now Morgan was scared. Then 34, he was a muscular man who, in fact, fit the image of a typical Dahmer target (though Morgan isn’t gay). But he had little chance in a fight — Morgan had lost his right leg in a motorcycle accident and walked only with the help of a prosthesis. Plus, his tormentor was a couple of inches taller and obviously had the advantage of insanity on his side.
As the man hovered furiously within arm’s length of Morgan, there were no other customers in the store, and the clerk was in the back. Morgan said these thoughts were racing through his mind:
“Does he have a knife? Is he going to grab my arm? Is he going to try to drag me out of the mall?”
Then the man suddenly bolted out of the store. Morgan said the great relief he felt was soon overtaken by concern.
“I just knew this guy was going to approach somebody,” he says. “He was going to hurt someone.”
As he slowly followed the man, he made a mental note of his face, his scraggly blond hair, his yellow T-shirt, his blue jeans, and his white athletic shoes. He followed him into the Sears store and saw the man turn toward the toy department.
The department was in the back of the store, and Morgan realized that the man might walk back out of the store and see him — and the last thing he wanted was another frightening confrontation.
So he left the store.
Adam Walsh, who disappeared that same afternoon, was last seen in the Sears toy department, where his mother had let him play a videogame while she shopped.
The same day, unknown to Morgan, a TV producer named Bill Bowen saw a disheveled man with straggly blond hair throw a struggling young boy into a blue van in the mall’s parking lot.
When Morgan heard about the kidnapping of Adam Walsh on the news later that night, he was certain the man he’d seen must have been responsible. After talking to neighbors and coworkers about it, he went to the police. He says an officer blew him off because he hadn’t seen a vehicle tag number for the blue van they were looking for. He was told he would get a phone call. It never came.
Morgan says he followed the case during the next ten years, especially when serial killer Ottis Toole became a prime suspect. Toole is well-known for admitting to murders he never committed, and the wildly contradictory “confession” he gave police never matched up.
Yet John Walsh, after first being skeptical of Toole, came to believe he committed the crime.
Morgan says he knew they had the wrong guy because the distinctively hideous-looking Toole wasn’t the guy who approached him at the mall.
Ten years after the abduction, almost to the day, Morgan was doing a “paper check” at the Herald when he saw a mug shot in the morning edition of a guy from Milwaukee who was caught with body parts in his bedroom and a severed head in his refrigerator.
It was the guy from the Radio Shack. It was Jeffrey Dahmer.
No doubt.
Morgan almost fell down. His coworkers had to keep him calm.
Bowen, another key witness from that day, saw a similar picture in a Birmingham newspaper about the same time. He says it was as if he were struck by a baseball bat. It was the same guy who threw the boy into the van. It was Jeffrey Dahmer.
No doubt.
Neither man knew about the other or had any way to know that Dahmer happened to be living in South Florida at the time, working at a sub and pizza shop a mere nine miles from the Hollywood Mall. That wasn’t reported until a couple of days later.
They both contacted Hollywood police about Dahmer. Det. Jack Hoffman, who had been in charge of the case all along, took the information fairly seriously and went to interview Dahmer in prison about it.
He called Morgan upon his return.
“Dahmer looked me straight in the eye and told me he didn’t do it. And you know what? I believe him. That kid doesn’t fit his M.O.,” Morgan remembers the since-retired detective telling him. He remembers feeling incredible disappointment.
“Someone forgot to tell Dahmer he had an M.O. to stick to,” he says.
At the time, Morgan didn’t know that Purtell, the FBI agent, had also spoken to Dahmer about the Walsh case on several occasions. Purtell says that Dahmer, in between denials, gave him what he considers near-confessions.
Once, for instance, the killer told him: “I didn’t kill Adam. Whoever killed him couldn’t live in a prison anywhere in America.”
The implication: Dahmer wouldn’t confess because he’d surely be killed vigilante-style in prison for the crime (which happened to be his fate anyway).
Then he told Purtell after another denial, “You know Florida is a death penalty state.”
(Ironically, one of the bizarre bits of “evidence” offered by Hollywood police and others that Dahmer didn’t kill Adam is that he often proclaimed he wanted to die and would have jumped at the chance to be electrocuted in Florida.)
Other than speak with Dahmer, Hollywood police did little investigation into the matter. They never so much as tracked down Dahmer’s employers at Miami Sub on Collins Avenue. It was left for the writer Harris to do that more than a decade later.
Harris, who helped to debunk the Toole theory in the pages of this newspaper in 1997, began to investigate the Dahmer link in 2002. He tracked down former managers and employees of the sub shop who remembered Dahmer and told him that the pizza delivery operation included a blue van that could have easily been accessed by the serial killer.
He gave his findings to the Hollywood Police Department in late 2002. After a delayed and scattershot probe of the findings, the department called the theory bunk. Harris continued on his book project and kept adding to his manuscript until he finally broke the story in the Daily Business Review.
John Walsh reacted to news of Harris’ work by first complaining about the shoddy police investigation. Then, after apparently getting more information from the Hollywood police, he issued a statement saying that he didn’t believe there was any “credible” evidence linking Dahmer to the murder of his son. His spokesman, Avery Mann, didn’t respond to my phone messages for comment.
The official line of the Hollywood police in regard to Dahmer has basically been a version of, “Move on, there’s nothing to see here.”
It’s a ridiculous stance but one that is predictable from a department that has notoriously lost evidence and bungled the case to the point that it seems more intent on covering its own hide than in finding the killer.
The cannibal caught in Wisconsin is undoubtedly a viable suspect. It’s easy to surmise that when Dahmer — who was known to glare at his victims in an attempt to hypnotize them — failed to get Morgan, he took his frustration out on the weakest link he could find in the uncrowded mall, a 6-year-old boy whom he threw into a blue van.
Of course, there are some details that don’t match. For instance, Bowen remembers Dahmer wearing a green Army jacket, not a yellow T-shirt. The killer could have put on the jacket before abducting Adam, or one of the men might have just flubbed a detail.
Yes, but what about Dahmer never killing kids? Well, during his career as a serial killer, which began well before 1981, he killed a 14-year-old boy and was convicted in sex crimes involving a 13-year-old and two 12-year-old boys. And if you want to talk about M.O., then what about the fact that Adam was decapitated and the body essentially disappeared? It fits Dahmer’s style in chilling fashion.
At the very least, Arthur Jay Harris’ case should be deeply investigated by trained investigators who share at least one very important qualification: That they have never, ever been employed by the Hollywood P.D.
“Let’s look at the information that Harris has, unbiased,” Purtell says. “Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get some retired officers, detectives, who are well-respected to look into this and tell us what they find?”
Before that can happen, though, somebody is going to have to take the lid off that box.
